Album Info:The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad built a 28.45 mile (45.78 km) route between between Lake Hopatcong/Stanhope, NJ near Port Morris to Slateford, PA in 1909-11. The Cutoff (also known as the Stanhope-Slateford Cutoff (due to beginning at Stanhope, NJ near Landing/Port Morris and running to Slateford, PA); the New Jersey Cutoff; the Hopatcong-Slateford Cutoff and Blairstown Cutoff (since it ran via Blairstown, NJ)) was built using massive fill and concrete and was designed as a high speed route with no grade crossings. Two massive viaducts were built as well. When opened on December 24, 1911 the Cutoff replaced the "Old Road" (the old main line via Washington, NJ) as Lackawanna's main through route. Passenger service continued until January 1970 and freight service lasted until 1979 when Conrail rerouted service to other lines. NJ Transit is planning restoration of service in the coming decade between Scranton, PA and Hoboken, NJ and New York Penn Station via the Cutoff. Description:  1912 concrete freight station visible at right behind tree, albeit slightly modified. This station is similar in design to brick Convent Station from same year. Blairstown is home to Blair Academy (www.blair.edu), a private boarding school founded by John Blair (on the DL&W Railroad board in the 19th century) and many students used this stop.
